To contribute to the commemoration of the University of Cluj (Romania) of geographer Emmanuel de Martonne (1873-1955), this exhibition highlights the pages of field notebooks that the French geographer devoted to Romania. They are devoted to the excursions he led through the country in 1921.
The Library of the Institute of Geography holds a corpus of archives relating to Emmanuel de Martonne that includes twenty-seven field notebooks. Fully digitized and available online, this collection can be discovered on NuBIS.
Among the twenty-four notebooks, notebooks [16] and [17], which are devoted to Romania, Martonne’s favorite field, occupy a special place in the corpus. They are precious witnesses of the geographer’s activity, and give us a glimpse of Emmanuel de Martonne’s Romania, his way of exploring it, and of making scientific observations that will nourish his reflections and his publications.

The organizing committee of the exhibition
We are particularly grateful to the heirs of Emmanuel de Martonne and Ana-Maria Stan, researcher at the History Museum of the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, for providing information on Emmanuel de Martonne’s Romanian colleagues.
Emmanuel de Martonne
A student at the École Normale Supérieure, then a professor of history and geography (1895), E. de Martonne founded the first geography laboratory at the University of Rennes. Considered one of the masters of French geography, he published a Traité de géographie physique (1909, numerous editions) which was to serve, for nearly half a century, as a basic work for the training of future geographers and as a guide, as well as an indispensable reference, for many researchers.
