Christine Kosmopoulos has a degree in philosophy of science and is a senior research engineer at the CNRS. She is specialized in digital publishing and scientific information in the context open science for the humanities and social sciences.

She is editor-in-chief of the journal Cybergeo, responsible for the CybergeoNet project and co-leader of the JournalBase project. Her research work focuses on the impact of new information and communication technologies in several directions: the issue of NICTs for the SHS, open science, the enhancement of scientific productions and quantitative scientific evaluation.

She has been several times assigned as expert for these issues, at local level (e.g. Réseau inter-universitaire, INED, Ministère de la recherche) as well as international (e.g. European Research Council, European Science Foundation, University of Vienna) .

Scientific activities

  • The challenges of new technologies for Human and Social Sciences : I study the emerging models of scientific dissemination in SHS in the context of the digital revolution, whether in terms of publication, documentation, access, sharing or evaluation. I am involved in innovative projects, open publishing (diamond model), data sharing, open archives, machine translation and the critical study of bibliometric indicators and quantitative evaluation. The original status of SHS within the scientific world makes it a very fertile ground for many innovations.
  • Quantitative evaluation in the Social and Human Sciences : The digital revolution has led to a veritable explosion of online publications, but has also brought about a profound transformation in modes of dissemination and has impacted evaluation issues. The use of bibliometric indicators, which are supposed to provide quantitative information on the impact of scientific productions, has been widely developed. I propose to study the indicators envisaged in SHS, the accuracy and completeness of the data, to compare the different sources for bibliometric use, and to study recent proposals in terms of alternative indicators derived from social networks (altmetrics). The aim of my research is to provide a reasoned and quantified support for the hypothesis of the application of these tools in SHS and to bring out other quantitative evaluation alternatives linked to open access.
  • 2014-2015: I was core expert assigned by the European Research Council to conduct small scale analysis and studies on HSS based mainly on the ERC’s Monitoring and Evaluation strategy, taking into account good practice and experience from monitoring and evaluation activities of national research systems, in particular regarding the ERC’s complementarity and added value. My mission culminated in a report on “Quantitative Performance Measurement in the Social and Human Sciences” in 2015 freely accessible on: https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01853406/document
  • 2014 : I was member of the Steering Committee of ERC study “Comparative scientometric assessment of the results of ERC-funded projects”.

Coordination of projects

  • 2019-2021: CybergeoNet – Building on the specialized vocabulary of geography, the project aims to develop a scientific translation protocol adaptable to other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The aim is to systematize actions already experimented in terms of translation, and to test methodological advances that will be shared with other journals.
  • 2008-2020, co-responsible with Michèle Dassa (INSHS) of JournalBase: A bilingual platform for searching journals in the Social Sciences and the Humanities and comparing their listings: http://journalbase.cnrs.fr/
  • 2015 : Co-organizer and Member of the scientific committee of the Symposium on « [The Open Access in the South countries» with the collaboration of the CNRS-INSHS, l’UNESCO, AFD. Paris, AFD and CNRS Michel-Ange, 11-12 March 2015.
