L’analyse spatiale dans le champ universitaire britannique : de la « New Geography » à l’entrepreneuriat de la donnée ? (« Spatial analysis in the British academic field: from the “New Geography” to spatial data entrepreneurship? »)

Abstract

Spatial analysis is a research approach based on generating knowledge to answer “spatial” questions or problems – by applying formal mathematical, statistical and/or computer methods. It’s a way of producing geographic knowledge that had its first institutional forms in the United States shortly after the Second World War. Subsequently, the British scientific world was one of the main disseminators of spatial analysis. At the crossroads of the canons of academic geography and the professional worlds of research, territorial development, architecture and consultancy, spatial analysis developed by stealth in Great Britain. By examining the dynamics of the production of the principles and tools of spatial analysis in the British academic field since the 1960s, this thesis seeks to highlight the telling and structuring nature of the circulation of spatial knowledge in contemporary scientific production.
