Summary

The Grand Paris Express project aims to generate profound urban transformations within the districts it will soon serve. This thesis examines the effects of the announcement of this metropolitan infrastructure’s construction on social housing policies and production. This doctoral work sits at the intersection of urban geography and turban planning policy, and contributes to the analysis of the social division of space in the Paris region through the lens of social residential production regimes.

This thesis focuses in particular on the gaps between ambitions of residential diversity and attractiveness and the socio-spatial dynamics at work at the intra-urban scale. It proposes the concept of social residential production regimes to understand the tensions between global logics and local configurations. The methodological approach relies on a mixed method combining quantitative analysis drawing on social housing production data and socio-economic indicators, with an in-depth qualitative investigation based on three case studies.
