Kai Shang, PhD candidate in Urban and Rural Planning at Tsinghua University (Beijing, China), is currently a visiting PhD student at Université Paris Cité and the UMR 8504 Géographie-cités laboratory for a six-month research stay, hosted by Pierre Pistre, Associate professor in human geography (Université Paris Cité / Géographie-cités).
His doctoral research, entitled The Urban-Rural Continuum: Reconceptualizing Urban-Rural Territorial Space in the Context of Urban-Rural Integration Trends, develops a methodological framework based on multi-source spatial data to identify different levels of the urban-rural continuum in China and characterize the transition from urban to rural areas. The research aims to support place-based spatial planning and regional development by providing a more refined understanding of urban-rural differentiation.
A comparison between France’s & China’s approaches to urban-rural classification and rural revitalization
His research focuses on the French rural typology system (Typologie des ruralités) and its implementation in rural policy during his visit in Paris. He is examining how differentiated approaches to rural classification have informed recent policy reforms, particularly the transition from the Zones de Revitalisation Rurale (ZRR) to the France Ruralités Revitalisation (FRR) scheme. The findings will be compared with China’s approaches to urban-rural classification and rural revitalization. He is also conducting fieldwork and interviews in rural areas surrounding major metropolitan regions, including Paris, Toulouse, and Rennes, to better understand recent patterns of rural development.
