Abstract
The City-Region Explorer: Visualizing urban linkages for policy and planning
The seminar examines how three approaches that have moved beyond the urban-rural dichotomy—the Degree of Urbanization (DEGURBA), Urban-Rural Catchment Areas (URCA), and Multi-Tier City-Regions (MTCR)—have advanced our ability to analyze accessibility to services, infrastructure development, and regional planning. It will introduce participants to the functionalities of the City-Region Explorer Platform that combines interactive mapping with advanced data analytics and offers intuitive access and powerful tools to navigate and analyze multi-tier city-regions worldwide. The findings demonstrate a significant variation in the size and scope of city-regions across the world, and in how populations are distributed across city-region types. Potential applications of the global city-region dataset for guiding research in regional planning and sustainable development will be discussed.
