MIDEM+, the 2024 edition of MIDEM, will take place in Cannes from January 24 to 27, 2024. This event brings together music, creative industries and Web 3 communities, hosting over 50 speakers over four days around conferences, masterclasses, and concerts.
On January 25 (4:55pm-5:15pm), Manuel Moussallam, Director of R&D at Deezer (France) and Thomas Louail, CNRS researcher and member of Géographie-cités, will give a talk entitled ‘The reality behind our music choices’

In an era where streaming platforms shape our musical experiences, our panel explores the intriguing divergence between what people claim to be their favourite music and what their streaming data reveals. This session delves into the groundbreaking findings from an extensive study involving over 15,000 Deezer users, juxtaposing their survey responses with actual streaming habits.

Thomas Louail au Midem 2024Thomas Louail is a CNRS researcher who works in the field of computational social sciences. Since 2014, in partnership with Deezer, he has been studying streaming dynamics and individual consumption patterns in the vast catalogs hosted by streaming platforms: how do people choose the music they stream? What forms do the social diversity of listening and tastes take in the streaming era? What are the most convincing statistical (and explainable) models to explain this diversity? What are the measurable effects of recommendations (machine and human) on the musical diversity to which people are exposed? To study these questions he works with sociologists and computer scientists, and Deezer’s R&D department. This collaboration resulted in an ANR-funded collaborative project, RECORDS.

RECORDS

The RECORDS project combines surveys and big data to study the diversity of consumption and listening practices on streaming platforms, and the measurable effects of recommendations, contexts, and locations on platform listening. Funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), RECORDS is a collaborative research project involving researchers and engineers from three CNRS laboratories and the R&D departments of Deezer and Orange. The project is coordinated by Thomas Louail, CNRS research fellow at Géographie-cités, Camille Roth, CNRS research fellow at the Centre Marc Bloch (CMB) in Berlin, Philippe Coulangeon, CNRS research director at the Observatoire Sociologique du Changement, Jean-Samuel Beuscart, researcher at Orange R&D, and Manuel Moussallam, head of the Deezer R&D team.
